Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild

Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild connects a visit to Woodstock with an artistic community whose origins precede its better-known musical associations. Construction of the Byrdcliffe colony began in 1902, and it was operating by the summer of 1903. Its Arts and Crafts ideals linked creative work, rural surroundings and the value of skilled hand production.

For an ordinary village visit, the Kleinert/James Gallery at 34 Tinker Street is the most direct point of entry. Exhibitions bring historic and contemporary work into a central location, distinct from the original colony on Mount Guardian. The current exhibition, Going Upstate: The Avery Family in Woodstock, is scheduled through October 25, 2026, with Friday-to-Sunday gallery hours.

Visiting the historic colony or White Pines requires a different arrangement. The contact page describes group tours by appointment, requested at least a month ahead with a six-person minimum. The history page separately says the 2026 White Pines tour season is to be announced, so a casual visitor should not assume a regular walk-in house tour is available.

Artists continue to use the colony, and occupied residences are not open to visitors. Confirm the meeting point and buildings included in any arranged tour. Byrdcliffe is valuable both as a place to see art and as an explanation of why Woodstock developed a sustained creative identity. Matching the gallery visit or colony appointment to the actual calendar makes that history accessible without intruding on the working community.
