About Overlook Mountain Wild Forest
Overlook Mountain Wild Forest gives Woodstock a substantial mountain walk with views toward the Hudson Valley and central Catskills. The principal route follows an old carriage road toward the historic fire tower. Its broad surface should not be confused with an easy stroll: NYSDEC describes a continuous ascent of 1,370 feet over a one-way distance of 2.4 miles.
Along the route stand the ruins of the last, never-completed Overlook Mountain House, begun in the 1920s. The agency instructs visitors to view them from outside rather than enter the structure. Near the summit, a separate ledge path offers views, with drops that require attention and a need to remain on marked routes.
Shorter alternatives exist within the same forest. Meads Meadow and Overloop provide routes suited to visitors who do not want the sustained summit climb. They can be reached from the relevant trailheads, including the Meads Meadow parking area on Macdaniel Road. Choosing one of those walks is a different plan from turning an ambitious summit outing into an improvised short visit.
The forest is open for recreation year-round without an entry fee, but weather and seasonal conditions determine appropriate preparation. The listed telephone is the DEC regional office, not an on-site reception desk. Navigate to the trailhead on Meads Mountain Road, take the current map and allow time for the descent. The maintained road also serves private infrastructure and is not an invitation for visitor vehicles to drive to the tower.
