About Wetumpka Impact Crater Discovery & Visitors Center
Wetumpka Impact Crater Discovery & Visitors Center helps the visitor read a landscape whose significance is not immediately visible from a downtown street. The city and the Crater Commission explain an asteroid impact approximately eighty-five million years ago, when the area was covered by a shallow sea. The surviving hills represent an eroded impact structure, rather than a freshly excavated circular hole.
The Company Street center supplies interpretation, informational exhibits and educational materials. Commission projects connect science with art, including crater-related murals in the downtown alleyway. This offers a way to understand the story before trying to recognize its larger geological traces from public roads.
Municipal information confirms a self-guided driving tour, with maps available through the visitor center. Follow the published route and use lawful public viewpoints; a crater landscape should not be presented as unrestricted access to every hillside or property. The center and the geological structure also have different locations and forms of access.
The Commission publishes center hours Thursday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Its website retains a February 2025 guided-tour calendar, which does not establish a currently bookable 2026 departure. Ask the municipal tourism contact about the next confirmed guided program. The phone recorded here is the city’s tourism information line, not an independently verified direct center switchboard.
