Ivy Green — Helen Keller Birthplace

Ivy Green gives Tuscumbia a story that reaches far beyond the town. Helen Keller’s birthplace preserves a domestic setting associated with her childhood, including the house, cottage and water pump central to accounts of her education with Anne Sullivan. The National Park Service identifies the property as a National Historic Landmark.

The visit has greater meaning when Keller is understood as an adult author and advocate as well as a child learning language. Her later work addressed disability, women’s rights, labor and peace. That wider life prevents the familiar pump episode from becoming the whole account of an exceptional public career.

The operator opens Monday–Saturday, 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m., with the last tour starting at 3:45 p.m.; Sunday is closed. Several holidays interrupt that schedule. Arriving before the last admission matters more than merely reaching the grounds before closing.

The outdoor production of The Miracle Worker follows a separate summer calendar. Published 2026 performances ran in June and July, excluding July 3–4. Those dates have passed at this September verification; they do not establish an autumn performance. Choose Ivy Green for the historic site itself and add theater only when an actual production date matches the journey. House admission and a play reservation answer different needs.
