Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve protects a landscape that gives the Flint Hills much of their identity. Located north of Strong City, it combines prairie conservation with the historic buildings of a cattle ranch. The visitor center’s orientation film and exhibits provide an introduction before travelers choose between the ranch complex and a longer walk into the grassland.

The preserve has more than forty miles of trails, including former ranch roads. These are walking routes, with surfaces of gravel, dirt and mown grass. The National Park Service describes Bottomland Trail as wheelchair-friendly except when wet; other routes can present significant obstacles. Visitors with mobility requirements should ask about current conditions and suitable options. Bison occupy parts of the preserve; sightings are not guaranteed, and the animals must be given ample distance.

Admission is free, but building hours and trail access follow different schedules. The visitor center closes on Mondays and Tuesdays during its November-to-March winter schedule, while historic buildings follow their own published arrangements. For 2026, the official guided-tour page makes scenic van service dependent on funding, so a vehicle tour should not be treated as a guaranteed amenity. Call before planning around one. Camping and overnight parking are not permitted. The preserve rewards a visit organized around the actual landscape, season and access conditions, rather than an assumed package of tours.
