Retreat Gastropub

An independent Central West End gastropub opened in 2015, serving made-from-scratch American cooking, craft beer and Sunday brunch.

About Retreat Gastropub

Retreat Gastropub translates Central West End into the scale of a contemporary pub: reclaimed wood, concrete, a prominent bar and a screened sunroom used as a sheltered patio. It opened in 2015 and describes its approach as made-from-scratch American cooking, an extensive craft-beer selection and seasonal cocktails. Its corner at Sarah and Laclede sits between the neighborhood’s historic corridor, the Cortex innovation district and The Grove. It can anchor a dinner, but Sunday brunch is the clearest reason for weekend visitors to stop.

On Sundays, the kitchen serves brunch. The menu centers on pub plates made in house, paired with a rotating drinks program: classic and original cocktails, beer and vegetarian choices, many of which can be adapted for vegan or gluten-free diners, according to the restaurant. Guests frequently mention the burgers, shareable small plates, beverage list and covered patio; they also appreciate an atmosphere that feels comfortable without becoming careless. It is a heartier, more evening-oriented proposition than Bowood, suited to a long gathering or late lunch.

Sunday brunch gives the weekend a different rhythm from dinner service. Retreat takes reservations through Resy and keeps a current menu online; because it changes seasonally, review it before going. It is not trying to be an elegant brunch salon. Its strengths are a well-kept pub setting, food made in house and a drinks list that can turn brunch into a longer afternoon.
