Southport Historical Society has cared for its preservation since 1984. The building was also used as a location for the 1986 film Crimes of the Heart. That connection belongs to its cultural history and should not be blended with claims about people actually imprisoned there. The building has had distinct uses across time.
The operator publishes an April–October season with a limited afternoon opening on Wednesdays and Saturdays and additional Fridays in summer. Municipal pages and directories sometimes summarize the season differently. This profile follows the managing society's information and retains the need to confirm the actual date.
The experience is not equivalent to a large museum requiring an entire day. Its interest lies in the building and what it reveals about a local jail's organization.
