About North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport
North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport belongs to the state's Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and its three-museum maritime network. Its mission is to collect, preserve and interpret material culture connected with the maritime history of the Lower Cape Fear.
The museum began in a small Howe Street location, became a state institution in 1999 and moved to Moore Street in 2010. It occupies former officers' quarters on the grounds of Fort Johnston. That location connects it with neighboring heritage sites while leaving it with its own address, collections and operating arrangements.
Exhibits examine people's relationship with the Cape Fear and Atlantic through navigation, archaeology, invention and other regional themes. A periscope from USS Dolphin is among its interpretive elements. Programs and events extend the offering, although their dates and places must be checked separately from ordinary admission.
Regular entry is free, and current information advertises Tuesday–Saturday opening. During a long weekend, schedule the galleries before Sunday. The museum's role is to explain what can be observed from the waterfront, allowing the river to be understood as a place of work and communication as well as scenery. Its collection provides a distinct focus within the broader Fort Johnston historic setting.
