Skaneateles Historical Society Museum at the Creamery

The Skaneateles Historical Society Museum gives the lake a history beyond its present-day scenery. Housed in the former Creamery on Hannum Street, it brings together material about the village, the surrounding town and the people who worked and traveled on the water. The historical society acquired the building in 1989 and opened the museum in 1992.

Historic boats are a particular reason to visit. The collection connects pleasure sailing and craftsmanship with a community that built vessels as well as used them. The restored Sarah Kuse, a wooden boat built in Skaneateles in 1926, offers one tangible example. Looking at the construction and proportions of these boats makes a subsequent lake excursion more informative.

At the September 2026 review, the institution announces that its renovated Historical Wing is open, with photographs, artifacts and displays about local life. A separate notice on the exhibitions page still describes a carriage-related exhibit as unavailable during renovation. Visitors should not assume that every item illustrated online can currently be seen.

The published regular hours are Friday and Saturday afternoons, a narrower schedule than many larger museums. Put the museum into the plan before arranging the rest of the village visit and confirm any special opening directly. It is a useful first stop for travelers who want to understand how boatbuilding and local work shaped the place they have come to explore.
