Hardman Farm State Historic Site

Hardman Farm State Historic Site adds an older Nacoochee Valley landscape to the visit beyond Helen’s alpine-style storefronts. The 173-acre property preserves a house built in 1870 by Captain James Nichols, who called the estate West End. Later owners included Calvin Hunnicutt and physician Lamartine Hardman, Georgia’s governor from 1927 to 1931.

Guided house visits introduce original furnishings and domestic technology described by the state, including lighting, telephone and climate-control features. The surviving dairy buildings reflect a commercial operation active from 1910 into the mid-1920s. These are separate layers of the property’s history, more informative than treating the house simply as a scenic mansion.

The nearby Nacoochee Mound is an Indigenous burial site whose history predates the house. The state cautions that its builders probably preceded Cherokee occupation. That context should take priority over romantic legends or any suggestion that visitors may climb a burial mound.

House tours run Thursday–Saturday under a seasonal timetable. March–December grounds access is available daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the last self-guided admission at 3 p.m.; house admission follows its own schedule. January and February have reduced days and an earlier last tour. The one-mile Helen to Hardman Heritage Trail follows the Chattahoochee with accessible paving and interpretation. Parking at both ends helps visitors separate a riverside walk from the paid historic-site tour.
