Opus 40

Opus 40 is a landscape-scale artwork rather than a conventional sculpture placed in a garden. Harvey Fite arranged its bluestone over thirty-seven years, creating an earthwork that occupies about six and a half acres within a larger park. The former quarry setting gives stone, paths and changes of level a direct role in the experience.

The site is in Saugerties, a separate outing from Woodstock. Alongside the sculpture are quarry trails, a gallery and the Quarryman's Museum. The museum is on the second floor of an old barn and is reached only by stairs. The sculpture itself has uneven surfaces and drops; wheelchairs and strollers are not permitted on it, although staff can identify alternative viewing points and routes into selected quarry areas.

The published autumn 2026 schedule reduces opening days after September 28 and again after October 12, with seasonal closure after November 7. Advance tickets are recommended because sales can stop at capacity. Severe weather can also close the grounds, with notices posted by the organization.

Ordinary daytime visits and scheduled events have different arrangements, including food policies. Choose the ticket for the intended experience rather than assuming admission includes a concert or tour. Travelers arriving without a car should arrange both transfers: the site's own guidance warns that taxis and app-based rides may have limited availability. Opus 40 rewards close attention to the artwork and its setting, with access selected to suit the visitor.
