Historic Huguenot Street

Historic Huguenot Street offers a way to understand New Paltz through the people who inhabited it, rather than through a collection of picturesque stone façades alone. The ten-acre National Historic Landmark district interprets more than three centuries of history, including Indigenous presence, Huguenot migration and the lives of both free and enslaved residents.

The regular tour uses selected structures to develop those themes. The Esopus Munsee wigwam is a replica, the 1717 French Church is reconstructed, and the Jacob Hasbrouck House provides a setting for discussing colonial life. Those distinctions matter: the tour does not present every structure as an untouched original building from the same period.

The 2026 schedule operates Wednesday through Sunday through October, then returns to weekends in November. The final regular tours are announced for December 13; afterward, tours and Visitor Center access are by appointment. Capacity is limited, and the specific houses visited can change according to preservation and operational needs.

Park in the designated Broadhead Avenue lot and follow signs to the DuBois Fort Visitor Center. Historic buildings have access limitations, so contact the organization in advance about mobility requirements. Some interiors are unheated or colder than outside, making suitable clothing useful in the cooler season. This is a valuable visit for travelers who want the attractive street to acquire historical depth and who are willing to engage with the unequal experiences that shaped the settlement.
