Foxfire Village Museum and Mercantile turns Appalachian history into a visit through buildings and recorded voices. Its physical address is 98 Foxfire Lane in Mountain City, separate from Clayton’s main streets and from the organization’s mailing box. More than twenty historic log buildings contain objects associated with regional life between 1820 and 1940.

The institution grew from a 1966 school magazine project. The first Foxfire Book appeared in 1972; students used book royalties to buy land on Black Rock Mountain in 1974 and relocated and restored historic structures. This origin explains why interviews and documentation belong alongside the cabins, rather than reducing the village to a picturesque backdrop.

Its archive holds decades of oral histories, images and video, with research access by request. Ordinary admission does not establish immediate access to archival material. The Children’s Village includes small cabins for play, while classes and craft demonstrations depend on the actual program. An earlier festival schedule cannot guarantee a blacksmith or weaver working every afternoon.
