About Montreat Wilderness / Montreat Conference Center
Montreat Wilderness is a network of natural areas and trails managed by Mountain Retreat Association, operating as Montreat Conference Center. The land is private and covered by conservation arrangements, while public hiking is permitted under the institution's rules. It is a separate outing from Black Mountain.
The hiking page updated August 28, 2026 describes more than 20 trails and over 40 miles of routes. That scale offers varied possibilities, but does not establish that every path is open. Recovery after Helene makes the current map and notices important before choosing an individual hike.
Parking is limited at several trailheads. Since July 2025, the institution has requested a voluntary contribution to support the network; it must not become a newly imposed compulsory 2026 fee in the description. The organization also identifies parking alternatives near Anderson Auditorium and Lake Susan.
The Assembly Drive address is the institutional center, not a common starting point for every trail. Choose the route first, then its correct access point. Montreat provides a substantial mountain experience, but the recommendation must match the effort required, available time and conditions confirmed for the specific path. The general size of the network is context, not a substitute for checking the intended route.
