Old Courthouse Museum — Monroeville

Old Courthouse Museum gives Monroeville’s literary identity a tangible setting. The restored courtroom follows its 1930s appearance, with the balcony, witness chair and judge’s bench helping visitors understand the room Harper Lee knew while her father practiced law. The museum distinguishes the real building from the fictional Maycomb of To Kill a Mockingbird.

The film was not shot here. Its set designer measured, photographed and drew the courtroom before recreating it on a Hollywood soundstage. That precise connection is more useful than describing the property as a movie location. Permanent exhibits, Harper Lee: In Her Own Words and Truman Capote: A Childhood in Monroeville, broaden the visit beyond a single familiar scene.

Construction began in 1903, with offices moving into the building in 1904. County offices left in 1963; the museum began as a part-time attraction in 1968 and opened full-time in 1991. The preservation story explains why the courtroom survives as a public cultural place.

Hours are Monday–Friday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.; Sunday is closed. The 2026 calendar lists additional closures, including October 12 and November 11, and reduced Thanksgiving-week access. Consult that dated calendar before fixing a holiday journey. A museum visit and a separately scheduled stage production should be planned as different forms of access.
