Grey Towers National Historic Site

Grey Towers connects Milford with the history of American conservation through the home of Gifford Pinchot, the first chief of the U.S. Forest Service. Completed in 1886 by his father, James Pinchot, the estate now operates as a historic site managed by the Forest Service. Its value lies in the relationship between the house, the grounds and ideas about the management of forests.

The first-floor museum includes the Great Hall, library and sitting room. In 2026, the special exhibition Where Forests Teach adds historical letters, forestry tools and a reproduction student scrapbook to the interpretation. Trails, wayside exhibits and visitor films extend the experience beyond the interior, allowing visitors to connect the family's domestic setting with its public legacy.

The 2026 museum season runs Friday through Monday through November 1, with an 11 a.m. guided tour and an afternoon open house. The site announces an exception for October 11, 2026: no open house, with guided tours at 11 a.m. and noon instead. These are dated operating arrangements, not a permanent timetable.

Tickets are sold at the visitor center on the day of the tour. The parking-to-mansion approach is uphill, and visitors needing a particular access arrangement should contact the site before arrival. Grounds access and museum admission are distinct; visiting the landscape does not automatically include entry to the house.
