Heritage Hall

Heritage Hall gives Madison’s historic streetscape an interior to explore. The tourism bureau dates the house to 1811 and describes the wealthier households whose nineteenth-century life it helps interpret. Its Greek Revival columns and furnished rooms make the building a specific house museum rather than simply another façade on a walking route.

The home remained privately occupied until 1977, when its preservation continued under Morgan County Historical Society. The bureau describes period furnishings drawn from a local family collection. Docent-led tours connect those rooms with the property’s occupants and preservation history. Stories associated with the house should be understood as interpretation or anecdote, rather than evidence that a supernatural event occurred.

The Society’s current website is being rebuilt, but its notice explicitly says the museum remains open. Tuesday–Saturday hours are 11 a.m.–4 p.m., with tours on the hour and the final departure at 3. Sunday hours are 1:30–4:30 p.m., with half-hour starts and a final departure at 3:30. This last-tour distinction matters more than arriving just before the building’s closing time.
