Minnewaska State Park Preserve

Minnewaska State Park Preserve brings the Shawangunk Ridge's lakes, cliffs and woodland into a substantial outdoor excursion from New Paltz. Its network includes both carriage roads and footpaths, so the experience can range from a selected lakeside route to a longer hike across more demanding terrain. Choosing the route before arrival is more useful than treating the whole park as one walk.

The Lake Minnewaska Visitor Center offers maps, exhibits and restrooms, with views over the lake. It provides a practical starting point for understanding distances and conditions. The main entrance on Route 44-55 is separate from the Sam's Point area, which has its own access arrangements; those destinations should not be confused in a navigation app.

The park's current notice states that swimming areas are closed until the 2027 season. Waterfalls and streams are not swimming locations at any time. For an autumn 2026 visit, plan around walking and scenery rather than a swim suggested by summer photographs.

Parking lots can fill on good-weather days, triggering temporary entry closures. Roadside parking is not an alternative. Closing times change seasonally, and visitors must carry out their waste. Bicycle access is limited to designated carriage roads and is affected by surface conditions. Minnewaska rewards a focused outing with time to return comfortably, particularly when shorter autumn daylight and an earlier park closing time reduce the usable afternoon.
