Tinies

Sarah Castillo’s Near Southside Mexican restaurant pairs a restored 1930s building and an agave bar with pipián, mole, regional fish dishes and plantain bites.

About Tinies

Tinies connects its Mexican cooking to a particular part of Fort Worth and a family name. Owner Sarah Castillo named the restaurant for her mother, Christina, whose nickname was Tinie. The dining room occupies a restored 1930s building in Near Southside, with exposed brick and an upstairs agave lounge. That combination of family reference and an adapted neighborhood building gives the restaurant a setting with a story of its own.

The current culinary team includes Ix-Chel Ornelas and chef de cuisine Guadalupe Sanchez. Their dinner menu moves through several regional Mexican preparations instead of relying on a single signature. Oven-roasted chicken with green pipián puts the sauce at the center of a familiar main course. A pork chop takes an al pastor treatment with roasted pineapple, while trout prepared in a zarandeado style and octopus with a Veracruz-inspired sauce give seafood a distinct place in the kitchen. These are different ways into the same restaurant, useful for a table whose guests want to order independently.

Smaller plates add another register. Potato taquitos and plantain bites filled with black beans sit alongside fish tacos made with Texas redfish. The tlayuda combines black beans and Oaxaca cheese with chorizo, so it should not be confused with the meat-free choices elsewhere on the menu. A baked poblano stuffed with beans and cheese offers a fuller vegetarian main course.

The agave lounge extends the restaurant beyond the dinner plate, but the food gives the evening its strongest point of reference. Tinies suits a group interested in comparing sauces, fish preparations and different styles of Mexican cooking in one meal. Desserts such as guava cheesecake and coconut-lemongrass flan continue that breadth, giving a shared table a reason to leave space for a final course rather than stop after the main dishes.
