Fonthill Castle

Fonthill Castle was Henry Mercer's home and a setting for his collections of tiles and prints. Its early twentieth-century reinforced-concrete architecture contains 44 rooms, more than 200 windows and 18 fireplaces. The interest lies in how the building and ceramic surfaces work together, making the interior an expression of Mercer's collecting and Arts and Crafts interests.

The usual visit is a guided tour of approximately one hour. This format gives context to a complicated house whose rooms and passages are not arranged like a conventional modern museum. Tickets should be reserved for the chosen departure, with arrival ten minutes before the start at the welcome center. Vehicle access is from Swamp Road, despite the East Court Street street address.

October 2026 includes Meander Days on October 10, 17 and 18, when visitors follow a special route at their own pace with guides stationed inside. This alternative still includes steep stairs and narrow, uneven passages. It does not remove the site's mobility limitations.

The current notices also set the last entry at 2 p.m. on September 26–27 and October 3 and 10, 2026, because of private events. Plan around those specific dates rather than the general closing time. Fonthill is not recommended by its operator for visitors with limited mobility or difficulty standing and using stairs. For those able to navigate the route, it offers a close encounter with a highly individual home in which architecture, collecting and ceramic design are inseparable.
