Sapelo Island Visitors Center

Sapelo Island Visitors Center provides both a mainland introduction to the island and a practical point for arranging a visit. Its exhibits explain ecology, history and culture, while a 1.1-mile trail explores coastal maritime forest on the center grounds. Seeing those exhibits does not require claiming that a visitor has already reached the island.

Sapelo has restricted visitation and no road access. Only landowning hosts can make state-ferry reservations for their guests; visitors must be preregistered. The reserve’s public tour is one available arrangement. The current schedule is Wednesday, 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., and Saturday, nine to one, except the last Saturday of the month. Those times include the mainland ferry departure and approximate return.

Public tours have a maximum of fifteen participants and use an air-conditioned bus or van, with some uneven terrain. Call the center to reserve and discuss accessibility. Check in at least fifteen minutes before departure; bring water, snacks, appropriate shoes and insect protection rather than relying on island retail availability.

The island’s cultural history includes the continuing Gullah-Geechee community of Hogg Hummock. Respect private homes and the actual host’s arrangements rather than describing the island as an unrestricted public park.

The reserve has announced its fiftieth-anniversary summit and community celebration for December 3–5, 2026, with separate registration for tours and events.
