About Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park
Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park belongs to the Kaw Nation and occupies land associated with its last reservation in Kansas. Established in 2002, the park presents a continuing relationship with place, not simply the remains of a vanished community. Its location near Council Grove allows travelers to connect the town’s historical institutions with a landscape interpreted by the nation itself.
Interpretive panels accompany the trails, and the site includes the Monument to the Unknown Kaw Warrior, a dance arbor and an open-air welcome center. A particularly significant presence is Iⁿ‘zhúje‘waxóbe, the Sacred Red Rock. Taken to Lawrence in 1929, it returned to the Council Grove area in 2023 and was installed in the park in March 2024; a rematriation celebration followed that June. These are separate moments in the return of a sacred object to the people and landscape with which it belongs.
The park is open to the public without an admission charge, according to World Heritage USA’s account of the project. This is also tribal heritage land, so a visit should follow posted guidance and any current notices from the Kaw Nation. The dance arbor does not imply a performance available on demand, and future campground plans should not be treated as an existing service.
