Chase County Courthouse

Chase County Courthouse gives Cottonwood Falls its most recognizable architectural landmark. Completed in 1873, the building was designed by John G. Haskell in a French Renaissance style. Its red mansard roof rises above walls of locally quarried limestone, bringing the county’s building material into a formal civic composition.

Inside, a three-story spiral staircase made of walnut is a central feature. The chamber of commerce also identifies a working courtroom with a pressed-metal ceiling, a jury room, a judge’s chamber and the historic jail among the building’s significant spaces. This remains an operating courthouse, so its value is not limited to an attractive exterior: the structure continues to serve the community whose ambitions it represented in the nineteenth century.

The city publishes self-guided visiting hours on weekdays during normal business hours, with government holidays excepted in the chamber’s guidance. Brochures are available in the foyer and at the chamber office. Group tours for ten or more can be arranged, and weekend access requires advance coordination rather than an assumption that the building will be open.
