West Point Foundry Preserve

West Point Foundry Preserve explains why Cold Spring is more than a picturesque river village. The ironworks produced machinery, locomotives, water pipes and Civil War artillery, placing the site within the history of American industrialization. Today, trails and interpretation connect those remains with a landscape that has recovered much of its woodland character.

Scenic Hudson manages the preserve at Kemble Avenue, with access also possible from the Cold Spring station area. The visitor brochure distinguishes routes of different length and gradient. The lightly graded Foundry Trail provides an introduction, while other paths involve steeper terrain or connect with the village. Choose the route that fits the group rather than treat every path as equivalent.

The remaining structures and foundations reward attention to the interpretation. They help a visitor imagine the scale and organization of production without promising a factory interior tour. The audiovisual material offered by the manager can add context on site; headphones allow it to be used without disturbing other visitors.

The preserve is free and normally open year-round from dawn to dusk. Check the manager’s current notices before setting out and remain on the designated routes around archaeological remains. It is especially useful for travelers arriving by train who want a substantial combination of local history and an outdoor walk within the village visit.
