Le Bouchon
The Poilevey family’s Bucktown bistro combines familiar French dishes, rabbit and trout preparations, and a whole roast duck for two.
About Le Bouchon
Le Bouchon has given Bucktown a French bistro table since 1993. Its continuity is a family story: Oliver and Nicolas Poilevey carry on the restaurant begun by their parents, with Oliver identified as chef-owner. The appeal rests on a recognizable repertoire rather than the need to turn dinner into a formal tasting exercise. Onion soup, escargots, roast chicken and steak frites make the cuisine approachable, while more elaborate preparations give a returning diner reasons to look beyond the most familiar order. A dinner here can be organized around a few classics or a substantial dish shared by two.
The currently linked dinner menu makes those choices concrete. The onion tart brings caramelized onions together with raclette and bacon. Salade Lyonnaise combines frisée, escarole, a poached egg, lardons and mustard vinaigrette; escargots use garlic and parsley butter. Main courses move from grilled sirloin and hand-cut fries to trout enclosed in puff pastry, with pea mousse and sorrel sauce. A rabbit cordon bleu brings raclette and ham into another classical form. These dishes offer different textures and levels of richness, so an onion or vegetable starter followed by one main can provide enough contrast without requiring a long order.
The whole roast duck for two gives the table another center, with bigarade sauce, duck-fat spätzle and braised cabbage. It changes dinner from two separate main courses into a shared preparation, a useful option for a couple interested in the same dish. The French wine list supports that bistro approach. Le Bouchon suits a date or a meal with someone who enjoys recognizable French cooking and wants to choose courses freely. Its place in Chicago is sustained by family continuity and a kitchen willing to keep working within, and occasionally around, the bistro tradition.
