Jean Bonnet Tavern

Jean Bonnet Tavern places American cooking in a stone building on Lincoln Highway west of Bedford. Its own historical account acknowledges uncertainty over the original construction date, while documenting the Bonnet family's purchase in 1779 and a tavern license in 1780. Those records provide a firmer introduction than the legends sometimes attached to old inns.

The restaurant occupies the lowest level, with stone walls, chestnut beams and a large fireplace. A tavern on the middle level offers the restaurant menu as well as tavern specials, and warm-weather service extends to a porch. Choosing a setting can therefore be part of the meal, subject to what is operating on arrival.

The menu's range includes crab and corn chowder, steaks and crab cakes. It suits diners who want a recognizable American menu within a building whose materials remain part of the experience. Specific dishes should be checked against the current service rather than treated as permanent fixtures.

The published arrangement is first come, first served, with no reservations. Dining hours are Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday is closed. A credit-card surcharge is also disclosed. Allowing flexibility for a wait is the practical tradeoff here: the historic setting can be a reason to come, but it does not remove the need to plan around the operating policy.
