Fort Bedford Museum

Fort Bedford Museum explains the military and civilian histories behind the town's name. The distinction between the original fort and the museum is essential: the fort dates to 1758, while the museum building was constructed in 1958 to commemorate it. Visitors are entering an interpretive institution, not a surviving eighteenth-century fort.

The Fort Era exhibition examines the installation's role as a supply depot during the Forbes expedition in the French and Indian War. The museum publishes daily summer and fall hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with holiday and seasonal exceptions. It reports that about 90 percent of the exhibits are accessible; the mezzanine remains an exception. Accessible parking is available, and staff can discuss the parts of the visit affected by stairs. Organized groups should request a guided visit at least 48 hours ahead. The result is a compact introduction to Bedford with enough context to make subsequent exploration more informed.
